The Fortis Hospital Advantage

At Fortis, surgeries are conducted in special environments called Space Theatres that are created and constructed for knee replacements. This special environment is a combination of expert surgeons and their team, Clean Air Laminar Air Flow System, and Space suits.

The Laminar Air Flow System helps keep the air clean of dust and micro-organisms. The HEPA (High efficiency particulate absolute) filter, which is the filtration of air on control velocity condition, cleans the air as per the specifications of the federal standard 209E. The efficiency of HEPA filters is 99.999% of all particles larger than 0.3 micron ensure that the laminar air flow is ultra cleaned over the entire operating area and instantly the theatre is bacteria free.

During the surgery, the surgeon and the immediate assistant wear specially designed space suits to assure absolute sterile handling of Bones and Joints. This suit comprises of a helmet worn and covered by a space gown.

Computer aided surgery facilitates current placement of artificial joint Prostheses to match the normal human anatomy. A normative anatomical data is already established in the computer. Based on the intra-operative findings during the surgery, the surgeon can control the outcomes by precisely implementing the 3D plans while collecting and analyzing detailed treatment data. This information reduces the risk of complications, surgery time, hospitalization time, and artificial joints wear through suboptimal selection and position of the implant.

Anesthesia Protocols

During the surgical process, you will be given anesthesia to eliminate the pain felt during the procedure. There are two most commonly used types of anesthesia for the total knee replacement surgery: spinal or general anesthesia. With spinal anesthesia, your anesthesiologist will inject medicine into your lower back. Although it will take away the sensation of pain, you might still feel some pressure and movement during the surgery. In case of general anesthesia, the medication will put you into a deep sleep so that you are not aware of any pain, pressure, or movement during the knee replacement surgery.

At Fortis Hospitals, we adopt Multimodal Analgesia Techniques. The concept of multimodal analgesia involves the use of different classes of analgesics and different sites of analgesic administration to provide superior dynamic pain relief with reduced analgesic-related side effects. The integration of multimodal analgesia techniques with a multimodal and multidisciplinary rehabilitation program helps enhancing recovery, reduce hospital stay, and facilitate early convalescence.

Our anesthetists and surgeons prefer regional and local modes of abolishing operative pain. Sciatic femoral nerve block, Spinal, Epidural and local nerve blocks may be administered by skilled anesthetists. The benefits are increased safety as there is less stress upon the body. Diabetics, Hypertensive and people with ischemic heart disease can undergo safe surgery. As the patient is not unconscious and is only sedated, he is unlikely to feel postoperative nausea and vomiting. A drink or light meal can be given soon after surgery as tolerated and this comes as a big boon to many elderly patients who are unable to tolerate overnight starvation. Multimodal analgesia employs a battery of pain relief methods and drugs. Pain relief is near total and the patient will not regret the surgery experience at all. Cryotherapy, oral drugs, pain pumps, and epidural anesthesia are all used to make your experience as pleasant as possible

It is advisable to talk to the anesthesiologist prior to the surgery regarding any questions or concerns you may have regarding the choice or effects of anesthesia.
